An EZ guide to our high-tech lingo

Backbone- What connects the Internet and the server. Ex. We use T3 lines. 

Browser- A program used to access and view information on World-wide Web, Gopher, or WAIS servers.

Chat Room - An area in an online service or BBS where several users can meet simultaneously and exchange typed messages.

Domain- A category of network on the Internet, or a specific network name, called a domain name. Every Internet address has a suffix that indicates its domain. Some common domain suffixes are .com Commercial organization), .edu (education), .gov (government), and .net (network).

Domain Name- The address to your website. Ex. paperclips.com or paperclips.org 

Domain registration- If you have a super cool domain name and you don’t want anyone else to use it, you have to register it under your name. Ex. You will be the owner of paperclip.com. 

E-mail (electronic mail) –-A means of exchanging typed messages between computer users in which messages are sent to specific addresses and stored in mailboxes.

E-mail forwarding- Forwards mail from the e-mail account that WE give you with your domain name, to any e-mail account you want. Ex. billy@paperclip.com forwarded to billy@hotmail.com

FTP (File Transfer protocol)- Transfers your files onto a server. 

FTP Server- Receives the files you sent to the server. 

Hit - A specific occurrence of a user accessing a server. Server traffic is sometimes measured in hits per hour or hits per day. An active Net server has thousands of hits per day. That is, it is accessed thousands of times per day by various users.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) - The programming language used to store and present information on Worldwide Web servers.

Internet Hosting- Providing space on the Internet. IP (Internet Protocol) Address- It is a number associated with your domain name. Ex. 236.548.895.789 or 12.54.54.25 

ISP- Internet Service Providers A company or organization that offers Internet access to customers for a fee. Also called an IAP, or Internet Access Provider. Changing ISP

ISP tag - Once you have found a new provider, request that your current-ISP who is hosting your Domain Name(s) (the Tag Holder) moves the Domain Name over to the Tag/NIC Handle of your new ISP.

    ISP Tag's apply to UK names:
  • .co.uk
  • .org.uk
  • .me.uk
  • .org.uk
    NIC Handle's apply to domain names ending with:
  • .com
  • .net
  • .org

Mailbot - A program that responds automatically to incoming e-mail. A mailbot receives e-mail messages and then replies to them automatically by sending messages or files to their authors.

MB (Megabyte)- A unite to measure disk space. From the same family as KB (Kilobytes) and GB (Gigabytes).  POP Account- E-mail account. Server- A big machine that holds a ton of data. When your website is uploaded, a server holds all the files. 

mySQL- is a database management system. A database is a structured collection of data. It may be anything from a simple shopping list to a picture gallery or the vast amounts of information in a corporate network. To add, access, and process data stored in a computer database, you need a database management system such as MySQL Server. Since computers are very good at handling large amounts of data, database management plays a central role in computing, as stand-alone utilities, or as parts of other applications. MySQL is the world's most popular Open Source Database, designed for speed, power and precision in mission critical, heavy load use.  

Modem - A device that allows a computer to connect with other computers over standard telephone lines by dialing phone numbers.

Open Source Database - means that it is possible for anyone to use and modify. Anybody can download the MySQL software from the Internet and use it without paying anything. Anybody so inclined can study the source code and change it to fit their needs.

Server- A computer that stores files and makes them available to other users on a network or on the Internet.

Snail Mail- An internaut's term for paper or postal mail.

Sub-Domain- An alternate domain name that INCLUDES your purchased domain name. 
EX. tom.paperclip.com

URL (Universal Resource Locator) - A standardized address format used for Internet addresses.

Worldwide Web (also WWW, or the Web) - A collection of information located on many Internet servers that can be accessed with a browser or by navigating via hypertext links.

Zine - An electronic publication on one very specific topic, published by one person or a handful of people, and distributed at intervals for free over the Internet.
